I have always been fascinated by butterflies. While my interest in the natural world started when I was younger, it really took focus during my undergraduate career. While obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Biology, I began collecting and preserving flowers and plants for a plant biology course, which is where my interest in floral preservation first started. My studies also gave me an interest in vertebrate zoology and entomology, giving me an understanding of the specimens I use in my artwork today.
My passion for insect preservation grew naturally through my time spent outdoors. On hikes, I started collecting interesting fungi, flowers, insects, and bones I found along the trail. Friends began to notice my interest and started gifting me unique items they found, which eventually led me to start creating my own pieces.
I started JessOddities to honor the environment through intentional, creative art. My work is a blend of the whimsical and the strange. I use natural elements to create pieces that celebrate the beauty of the odd. My whole life is centered around the environment: by day, I work as an Environmental Scientist, and after work, I’m in my studio creating these pieces.
All specimens including butterflies, insects, and bones along with all natural materials are ethically and sustainably sourced, ensuring that your art honors the environment and supports responsible conservation practices.
